The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1984)

Arthur Conan Doyle’un yarattığı Britanyalı hayalî dedektif 6 Ocak 1854′de Londra’da doğmuştur. İlk hikayesi olan Kızıl Dosya 1887 yılında gazetede basılmaya başlanmıştır. Sherlock Holmes, dedektif kahramanlar içerisinde belki de en meşhur olanıdır. Olayları gözlem yoluyla çözmesi ile ünlüdür. Tümdengelim yöntemini çok iyi kullanmaktadır, sorduğu soruların cevaplarının birbiriyle tutarlı bir bütün oluşturmasına dikkat eder, yani yöntemindeki fark, ipuçlarını bir araya getirip bir çözüm bulmak yerine, elindeki ipuçlarından anlamlı bir bütüne ulaşmaya çalışmaktır…

Aslında varolmayan bu detektifin kitaplarda her zaman adresi olarak gösterilen ve bugün müze olan evi İngiltere’de Baker Sokak 221B’dedir. Holmes, kendi dönemi için oldukça bohem bir adamdır, garip zevkleri de vardır ve aynı zamanda bipolar kişiliğe sahiptir. Morfin ve kokain kullanır ve bunları evdeki garip yerlere koyar, usta bir eskrimcidir,çok iyi keman çalar, Irene Adler dışında takdir ettiği veya hayatına giren bir kadın yoktur. Yunanlı Tercüman Hikayesinde, Holmes’ün bir ağabeyi olduğu ortaya çıkar. Mycroft’un, Britanya Hükümetinde oldukça özel bir görevi bulunur. Kardeşinin tanımıyla, kendisininkinden de üstün gözlem yetenekleri olan Mycroft, hükûmetin tüm çıkarımlarını analiz ederek en uygun hamleyi belirten bir “bilgi bankası” görevi görür. Mycroft Holmes, Ian Fleming’in karakteri olan James Bond’un gizli patronu “M” olduğu da söylenir.Holmes oldukça kibirli bir adamdır ancak Dr. Watson’a yaklaşımı herkesten farklıdır…

Dr. Watson, bu kurgudaki en önemli yere sahiptir çünkü yazarın okuyucuya anlatmak istedikleri onun Holmes’e sorduğu sorular sayesinde ortaya çıkar. Holmes, hem onu kıskanan hem de ona hayranlık duyan ve asla olay çözmeyi beceremeyen Scotland Yard dedektifleri tarafından ya da Baker Sokak’taki evine gelen müşteriler tarafından yardıma çağırılır. Dr. John Watson, Sherlock Holmes ile “Kızıl Dosya” macerasının başında karşılaşır. Afganistan’dan dönen Watson, bir ev arkadaşı arayan Holmes’le tanıştırılır. İlk başlarda Holmes’un gözlem ve çıkarım yeteneklerini göz ardı eden Watson, sonraları bu yetenekleri büyük hayranlık ve güven duymaya başlar…
